Balance, agility, strength, flexibility and focus.
These are all attributes we need for surfing. Practicing yoga will improve your performance and enjoyment in the water, because it enhances all these qualities.
‘Yoga for Surfing’ is a fun and challenging way to get and stay in shape for surfing. Dynamic standing postures, arm balances, twists, backbends, forward bends and many other poses will both loosen and strengthen your legs, core and upper body for fluid, powerful surfing.
Yoga’s emphasis on deep, steady breathing to unite mind and body brings mental focus and the ability to stay calm in any situation. It will help you master any fears to go after waves with grace and confidence. Whether you are a novice surfer or seasoned shredder, yoga will help you make the most of your time in the waves, while reducing your chances of injury and speeding your recovery between sessions.
About the instructor:
Melanie Jollymore began practicing yoga in 1993 when living in Whistler, B.C. She was immediately hooked. A year-and-a-half later she moved to Vancouver Island, where she completed a two-year teacher training apprenticeship in Iyengar Yoga at the Victoria Yoga Centre, studying under one of Canada’s most senior teachers and a physiotherapist. Melanie taught yoga at the University of Victoria, YMCA and Esquimalt Community Centre before returning to her native Nova Scotia at the end of 1996. In Halifax, she taught at the YMCA, University of King’s College and Saint Mary’s University. After moving to Seaforth and starting a family and a communications business, she stopped teaching, but continued practicing, yoga.
Melanie is thrilled to return to teaching by joining with One Life Surf to offer for ‘Yoga for Surfing.’ She first began playing in waves as a boogie boarder in the mid-1980s. Surfing attracted her, but there were few to no female role models for surfing at the time. Now, with so many women taking up the sport, and with encouragement and coaching from her husband, Keith, a long-time surfer, she is learning to surf and loving it. She especially enjoys paddling out with her 10-year-old son, Ben. She brings her first-hand experience of the challenges of learning to surf, the muscles that ache, and the skills you really need to build, to her teaching of yoga for surfing. She also brings a passion for yoga and a sense of humour.
